Don't cry before it's done

Around Parada 22 there were nice houses with flowers in the front gardens and trees in the backyards. That's how my mother remembers the neighbourhood she grew up before moving to New York. Now it's a concrete jungle with parking lots where wooden houses with verandas and rocking chairs used to be.
At Parada 18 the old market has been restored and surrounded by fancy restaurants. Neon lights turn night into day. Round midnight the barrio sinks into a restless sleep to wake again to the sound of construction.

Will Santurce rise again?

This page is dedicated to Meret, my daughter. What will have become of Santurce when you're my age?
